City visit Veszprém

Veszprém is the capital of our province, and one of Hungary’s oldest cities. Incidentally, European capital of culture in 2023. High time, then, to pay a visit.

Veszprém is one of the oldest cities in Hungary, and capital of the province where we live. Veszprém has about 56000 inhabitants, and is about 20 minutes away by car.

One of the main attractions is the castle, which is believed to date back to the 9th century (i.e. before the first Hungarians arrived here!). Unfortunately, that was closed today due to renovation works, so that will be for another time.

But even without it, Veszprém is worth a visit. Many of the tourist highlights are less than a km apart, so well doable on foot. What is particularly striking, compared to other cities we have already visited, is how green and livable it is here. Few high-rise buildings, and so from the castle hill or from the ‘Tűztorony’ (literally ‘lighthouse’, but here we mean the medieval tower from which people looked out over the city to see if there was a fire somewhere) you always have beautiful panoramas.

And yes, you will also find nice terraces and restaurants. But what you won’t find here much, if at all: pushy sellers of knickknacks, old houses whose ground floors have been knocked down for yet another shopping arcade, and traffic jams. Just, quietly, 100% enjoy!
