What grows and flourishes
Which plants will do well in Hungary?
Hungary is warmer, and drier, but with cold winters. Which plants will do well there? Which ones can we take with us from our garden in Mechelen? We ended up in a grape region, that much is clear. You also see apple, cherry and plum trees everywhere. Elder (and thus elderflower) grows fantastically here so I can drink elderflower syrup every day for a while to come. Lilac trees & privet trees growing wild give off their sweet scents. Wildflowers grow enormously in the fields: less over-fertilisation? The diversity of plants and insects is so much greater than ours. The wheat in the fields behind us is very high and already starting to turn a bit golden. However, the soil is very stony (it’s not really fun to garden, we’ll have to get used to it), but otherwise quite a lot of loam and in spring everything grows very well. We suspect the summer drought will hit hard. The Hungarian vegetable gardeners (and there are a lot of them, on Sundays everyone is busy in their gardens) mainly have to irrigate, otherwise it works itself.
