Tigger & Tux

A house without a cat is not an option. Hungary has many feral and stray cats, so it seemed obvious to us to adopt a large or small cat. However, adopting kittens turned out not to be so easy: the shelters only give cats away if you promise to keep them indoors. Since we live outdoors ourselves, that didn’t seem very appealing to us, and with a 5000 m² garden, it would be impossible to make it “cat-proof”.

Our neighbour suddenly turned out to have two litters (mother and daughter from last spring): plenty of choice from ten fluffy balls! We chose the cute ginger tomcat. Until the neighbour suggested that two kittens would have more fun together, and we decided to adopt the little “sister” too. However, the sister turned out to be a brother, and so Tux (Tuxedo) joined us too.

Conclusions after one month:

Two kittens are really lovely, constant entertainment, and as long as they have to stay indoors (i.e. until they are grown up), at least they are never lonely.

A border collie really has to learn how to play with such tiny creatures, but it’s working out fine! Mazy makes herself small, rolls onto her back and runs away like crazy when the kittens “attack”.

With two kittens, there is always one that comes to sit on your lap, but in practice it’s usually both at the same time: they are very sociable siblings.

  • Understanding stones

In Hungary, the stones are often buried under the surface and are only visible when the fields are ploughed. However, we note that the stones disappear because the soil ‘eats’ them. We think the frozen soil under the stones melts, causing them to sink.
