The castle of Nádasdladány
One of the beautiful castles in Hungary
About ten kilometres from here stands the castle of Nádasdladány. The current castle was built in Tudor style by Count Nádasdy in 1873.
The Nádasdy family lived in the castle until 1944, but the World War and Soviet rule in the following decades caused the castle to decay. A major renovation of the castle and the park around it began in 2009, and the castle opened to visitors in August 2021.
We had cycled to that castle a few weeks ago. But we hadn’t checked the website before we left – the castle is open all year round, but not on Mondays. And yes, that bike tour was on a Monday and so we found ourselves in front of a closed gate.
So today a second attempt, and now we could enter. Along with many other visitors. Was it because it is currently school holidays here too? Or because a Haloween exhibition is currently running? Or is it that busy every day? But in any case, every hour there is a guided tour (in Hungarian, of course), and our group consisted of about 35 people.
One of the highlights in the castle is the library, and in the 8-hectare park, the 6,000-m2 pond attracts attention.
Both the castle itself and the park around it have been beautifully renovated, and are well worth a visit.
