About us

Hello, we are Gert and Gaby
We are Gert and Gaby. Most of our life until now we lived in Mechelen, Belgium, together with our 4 children, 2 cats and a dog.
But those kids are grown up now, and we wanted to explore another part of the world. Time to start a new adventure.
Where and what? We looked at different regions – Spain? Too hot and dry in the summer. Sweden? Too dark and cold in winter. France? Too similar. And nice places (with natural beauty yet not too far from stores, preferably with water nearby) turned out to be quite expensive. Hungary was also on our list, and eventually won out.
Here you can buy a house far away from everything for next to nothing, but also houses that are reasonably close to cities and tourist attractions are still very affordable. The people are friendly, the surroundings beautiful. There is space and tranquility. The climate is not very different from Belgium or the Netherlands, but just a bit more pleasant. More sun, less gray days.
We chose a house in Berhida. A quiet village of about 6000 inhabitants, about 15 km east of Lake Balaton (so within cycling distance). A supermarket and a few stores are about 1 km away. Two big old cities within 30 km – Veszprém (European cultural capital 2024) and Székesfehérvár, the city where the Hungarian kings used to be crowned. A nature reserve begins just about at our back door. For what we were looking for, this seemed like an ideal location.
